Default Immobilizer light blinking (won't stop, ever)

I've got an '03 in the shop right now that came in for what amounted to basically a valve job (trashed valves) and a few other minor issues. Now, for no apparent reason, the immobilizer indicator is flashing. It just started this morning (or maybe last night), after having the car for a while and test driving it several times without issue.

The light is flashing all the time- key in, key out. The fuel system is not working at all, just like when the immobilizer system is reacting to a bad key.

What's odd is that the light won't stop flashing. In all my past experience, and per the shop manual, if the key is not recognized the light will flash after turning the ignition on and then stop. In this case it never stops. It's been going for a few hours now.

So- I haven't found verification that this exact thing has happened to anyone before, but it appears that the instances where random blinking or key rejection occurred, the immobilizer unit had to be replaced.

Has anyone experienced this issue before? I'd like to diagnose and replace what I can here before having to pay Honda $105/hr to do it.

Thanks!

here is a thread from another site with some possibilities, among them inuendo that your immobilizer system needs to be 'reset' by Honday if the wrong fuse was pulled???

Why not just ask the dealer to re-flash your key to your current ecu and see if that does the trick?

I'm guessing you don't have a spare key.

Hosed Immoblizer units can do that.

I have one key and it was a non-Honda blank. The car was an auction car and has a very questionable history (looks to have had severe body damage in the past). I'm hoping that it's not a latent reassembly or electrical problem.

Haven't pulled any fuses, the most electrical work I've done so far was related to pulling and reinstalling the trans and motor. I know I got everything reconnected right, though.

I REALLY don't want to tow this to the dealer.

I'd be looking to see if it had a aftermarket alarm stuck in the car and a hacked up key blank taped to the immobilizer receiver.

I guess a good test would be someone else's ecu and key.
