Default Impact Wrenches

Went and bought myself an impact wrench cause I wanna paint my rims and brake calipers, but there is a pin hung up on the head of the thing and the sockets won't fit. I've been wrenching on MY03 for a few months and collecting tools along with experience so this might sound like a dumb question, but hay, Ye have not because ye ask not, right? So is there something I need to do so my 1/2" sockets will fit my 1/2" impact gun?

The 1/2" drive sockets I just bought with my torque wrench say specifically they are not for use with impact wrenches. This implies, at least to me, that you have to have sockets specifically designed for use with an impact wrench.

regular chrome sockets on an impact gun = no good. Do yourself a favor and go out and get some impact sockets.

i can't think of ANY type of "pin" on the "head" of an impact that would not allow a socket to fit.

the portion of the gun the the socket fits onto is called an "anvil".
on the end of the anvil is a ring collar that exerts a small amount of pressure on the socket to keep it in place during use.

the only time a "pin" is used on an anvil is on 3/4"+ guns in place of the snap collar. and these pins are easily removed.

i highly doubt you bought a 3/4" impact gun.

got a picture of what you're talking about?

the reason why chrome sockets are not recomended for use on impact guns is that they are not meant to handle the extra force and generally break. you can still do it, but just expect it to break sooner or later.

Actually, IR 1/2" impact wrenches have been available with "pin anvils" for decades.

Pro impact sockets have a hole through the square drive part that the pin fits into. It holds the socket/extension on with no chance of accidental release. A small pin punch, piece of wire, whatever inserted into the hole in the socket will depress the pin and release the socket.

Note that extensions also can have pins rather than balls. I have a 3/8" impact extension with a pin. With a spark plug socket that has a hole, it's perfect for S2000 spark plugs. No chance of the socket coming off the extension. Guaranteed.

My Dewalt 1/2" cordless impact gun uses a pin for socket retention as well.
