If you change one pack, on most cars it tends to kill the others, or the others tend to follow. Not always but I see it happening a lot.

Default Coil Pack Expected Life?

Hi guys. I'm a new S owner ('06, 50k miles). My previous car was an '04 RX8. I would routinely replace the coil packs on the RX8 every 40k miles (rotary fires 3 times per revolution). I've read in this forum that the coil packs on an S usually last in excess of 100k? I would prefer to replace them before they fail, any recommended interval? Thanks in advance.

There's really no interval -- I've noticed through my small sample size of 2 Hondas that they do average about 100k miles or 10+ years in CA weather until one of them starts acting up.

On my s2000, after 100k miles, I had a small, hidden misfire that did not even register with an error code/CEL, so diagnosing it wasn't easy.

On my Accord, after 100k miles, I had a major misfire, and an easy diagnosis.

Just wait until you have visible symptoms, otherwise it's a waste of money.

Anecdote time? I replaced one failed coil pack (cylinder 4) two years and 15k miles ago. Used the C1265 from Duralast/Autozone that I learned about from this thread. Didn't bother with the rest. Car has run great. It's your car, replace whatever parts you want, but accessing the coilpacks is easy. I wouldn't throw away working ones, but it might be a good idea to keep a spare.I took some notes when I was shopping for coil packs - this is for 00-05 cars, 06+ have a different coil pack.

Denso is the OEM supplier.

OEM Part Numbers

2000-2003: 30520-PCX-007 ($103 from Majestic Honda)

2004-2005: 30520-PNA-007 ($52 from Majestic Honda) - or - this is the same as the coil pack/part # for the RSX and a dozen other Hondas, probably the easiest to find. Works great in all pre 06 S2000s.

Denso part numbers:
#673-2301 = RSX/04-05 S2000 coil part # ($40 from Amazon) = 30520-PNA-007

#673-2300 = AP1 coil ($93 from denso, $80 from Amazon)

As slowcrash mentioned, Autozone weirdly stocks the AP1 Denso coil pack - their internal item # is C1265. It's sold in a Duralast box but it is made by Denso for AP1 and says "099700-0430” - DENSO - Made in Japan - on the side, just like the 13yo coilpack I pulled out of my 2002 s2k. It was $70 and works beautifully.
