knock sensor

Default knock sensor

hey a friend of mine just broke my knock sensor while swaping out my tranny can i still drive he car that way and my cel came on afterwards pls if anybody has any info for me it would be much appreciated..

Hmm. My recollection from reading here is that the knock sensor is a PIA to replace and not cheap (not bad either IIRC). The problem, is that you need it to pull timing to keep preignition in line (the car adjusts timing based upon it sensing knock or preigition). If you continuously run good high ocatne fuel (solid 93) and stay out of "high possibility of knock" conditions (high load/high temp) then you could probably get by. Personally, I'd spring to replace it. The S is known to pull timing a bit even when running good high octane fuel. If you are in Cali or similar where 91 is the norm for premium, it is even more important.

Again: Replace it.

with the knock sensor out of commission I would bet the ECU goes into some sort of protective limp mode and runs decreased timing

They run about $120-150 depending on where you buy it. It is pretty easy to replace from under the car.
