It senses knock. Also known as detonation or pinging.

If the ECU senses knock it will retard the timing to save you blowing your engine (well, more realistically melting rings or overheating).

Not too important unless you are turbo charged, which it appears you are.

Get it fixed. Otherwise I'm sure you'll get a replacement one on your new engine.

I thought you said you blew your motor in a previous post...

Yaya...senses the frequencies that a engine gives when there is detonation or pinging at sound levels you cant hear....blah blah blah

Here's my version.

The knock sensor is basically converting certain frequencies (sp?) of sound to voltage. Your engine always makes noise, so it's always reporting voltage, even if it's very low. The ECU knows how much noise to expect from the motor, and over a certain level of voltage (expected noise) it begins to try and compensate to correct the problem (at the cost of power) to save the motor.

I expect it has certain filters so that it only hears a specific frequency and hence only reports knock.

kane.s2k: Yes I blow my engine 4 months ago, too much boost, broke a ring at 8000 rpm, imagine that, now I installed my new all forged engine but the knock sensor is broken, is a really pain in the neck to change it now that the engine is installed in the car, I'm going on monday to order the sensor at the dealer.

Thanks everybody for the help.
