Default knocking at idle

Hey guys,

So i just installed my Comptech Supercharger with Aftercooler. i took it for a run and the car is much faster!

I drove for an hour, and the car was doing well... i got to meet up with a another s2ki member with a turbo s2k... its sounding fine at this point... we go for a few runs on the highway and the car is so much faster... we go so far on 287 that we nearly take the bridge to staten island...

so we get off to turn around and i hear this ticking coming from my engine...

at idle the thing is making a knocking sound pretty bad. It seems to be coming from the valves... when i press the gas it goes away... and then kinda comes back when i get to about 2-2500 rpms... when im on load around those speeds the car makes the same noise... but its the worst at idle.. as soon i touch the gas it goes away and as the rpm's increase it kinda comes back...

You can hear it very loudly from underneith the car as well as well as all around the car... come someone please help me work out what the noise is

I checked the belt and all other moving parts and nothing is hitting...

thanks for the help... it went from making no 'real' knockking noises to a pretty bad one within one night...

Also, i had turned the FPR a few turns to add more fuel to the mixture because i was runnning pretty lean at WOT... could it be my injectors making the noise?

I can count the amount of noises per idle... its about 4-5 a second

Its either the timing belt tensioner or your valves are outta wack.

It could be rod knock but thats a very LOUD knocking sound, not a ticking noise.

so i located the sound... its at the front of the engine... it ticks at a higher rate than i thought before... and disappears right after idle... and then reappears around 2500-3500 rpms...

Timing chain tensioner?

tensioner sound like a baseball card in the spokes of a bike wheel and I think it should be 3 or 4 (don't recall) times more frequent than the noise from a valve. if its a tap tap or a click click it might be your injectors.. one of my injectors is very loud compared to the others (they are all loud to begin with). This issue has been discussed before and there has no been no solution other than replacing the injector, as they seem to perform perfectly.. just very loudly If you don't think its an injector, get an automotive stethoscope and listen around the top of each cylinder. They will all sound slightly different, but if one area is making the distinct noise you hear much louder than another, you can isolate the problem.

it kinda sounds like a baseball card in the spokes... but it is pretty loud... i could hear it from about 10 feet away... if it is the timing belt tensioner, is it bad for me to drive it?

i just took it for a drive and i can hear it as the rev increase and it goes away pretty much when i am decelerating... when under load it becomes louder... it does go silent right off idle and then comes back as the revs increase.

Don't know if you can hear the typical faulty tensioner from 10ft. I've never actually heard one If its the tensioner though, you don't have to garage it, but I wouldn't drive it unless you have to (i.e. to the dealer or to pick up your sick mother). If it gets borked completely, your chain could lose all tension and leave you with similar results as an engine which breaks its timing belt If you are mechanically adept, you would replace it yourself. It's inexpensive and fairly easy to do. I think theres a writeup in the DIY maintenance thread.
