laptop problems with AEM EMS
Alright, first I want to go ahead and get this out of the way before it becomes obvious in my post...i'm not that great with computers.
I have a laptop (2.3 GHz, 256 DDR Ram, Windows XP) and am trying to do some logging from my car. I know the cable from the EMS works because someone tuned my car already with their laptop.
Reading through the help file, it says locate a com port on the computer through the device manager. My computer does not list one, only a printer port. I decided to hook the laptop anyway, and just tried selecting different ports (1-10) in the AEM Pro software...well, on Com3 it appears to be doing something. It query's the ECU or something like that, but just sits there. I let it sit for about 5 minutes but nothing ever came of it. I don't see any bars going across the screen like it's downloading data or anything. Does this part take longer? Or does anyone know of something I might be missing here. I really would love to see some logs and I'd like to see how much boost I'm running.
Thanks,
I hope you guys understand what i'm talking about.

Hi,
Usually you will have com1 on your PC/laptop and possibly other com ports aren't taken, but com1 is usually what you want. Com1 is often what you plug joysticks or other peripheral devices into...then in AEM program you should be able to select Com1.
1. In device manager, does Com1 show under the ports?
2. Try right clicking on the com ports and choosing "scan for hardware changes" after you have plugged in the AEM stuff.
3. Also, does the AEM program come with device drivers? If so have you installed them?

It doesn't list any com ports what-so-ever...which I have never seen in any of my computers. All of my desktops have had at least 2 available. I haven't tried "scan for hardware changes" with it plugged in though.
I think BigPurp has nailed it on the head. I went to his link, and found what I think I need, but they don't list a price, or method of ordering it. I'm getting ready to try and dig deeper.
Thanks for the input guys! Tons of help!
