I've been told that some software doesn't like the serial to USB adapter. I was wondering if anyone has experienced this first-hand as I am about to purchase a laptop for this application as well as for the children's schoolwork.

TIA.

I'm using one, and it works ok. There are some issues. Most annoying is that evertime I use it I first have to find which COMM port the computer decided to put on it. Not a big deal but like I said annoying. The second problem I have is that if the computer goes into sleep/hibernate/any other condition other than ON it locks up and I have to reboot the computer. Other than that it works great. I've never had it flake on loading a map or reading information from the EMS.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm guessing then that you wouldn't let the fact that a laptop doesn't have a serial port keep you from purchasing one if it had all the other features you needed/wanted except the serial port?

I got one as well. Mine always works on port 5 and going into sleep thing is a pain like scorpion mentioned. Works fine though. Pretty much none of the new lappy's have a serial port so your choice would be limited.

Same here.
I just close and save before I unplug it and then power down.
This helps it from freezing.

I couldn't get mine to work with a new laptop that didn't have a serial port. I was unable to get the USB to serial adapter to work correctly with the EMS. I ended up getting an older second hand laptop to work with the AEM EMS. You should be able to pick one up inexpensively.

Thanks all. Dell's 600m has a serial port, however, I'd like to be able to have more buying options.

The usb adapter should come with some software. You must install the drivers and then switch around the ports. It didn't work for me at first either.

Jeff, I have no pm's from you, however, I just sent you one and will follow it up with an e-mail version. Your header is going out tomorrow via FedEx unless I hear from you after reading my message. Rick is apparently on vacation.
