Miles per tank
Keep in mind when saying "ride a bike" that it is not always feasible. depending on direction, 3 miles from my house would be getting on a large highway for example. Not sure the situation here but I have also lived where 3 miles in a car turns into a lot further due to highways not legal to ride on. There is also cold, rain, etc that most people are not going to ride a bike in, or maybe a person has a lot of stuff they carry back and forth to work, etc. Lots of reasons biking may not be a good answer.
Around town I run the gauge down to no bars on our '06(12.2 to 12.5 gal. to fill up). On one of our long drives we did put 13.5 gal. in it so I know I was running on fumes, not sure I was going to make it to the next town so I was not going over 45 mph and coasting as much as possible. Out west we go on drives where there is 100 or more miles between towns and sometimes I get a little nervous if I'm going to make it to the next gas station(that's why I carry 3/4 gal. of gas in my saddle bag on my bike).
On one trip we would not have made it to the next gas station but we stopped at a National park in Utah and they gave me 1 gal to make it to the next town(21 miles). They told me all n/p have gas for their vehicles and tourist that are very low on gas(that's good to know).

I have limited my driving to very very little. Sometimes a tank of gas in the Tacoma lasts us a month and a half or more now. But that is not feasible for everyone either. I certainly do not miss having to commute in the city, or even living closer to it actually
But I am not really big on the city life either so that works for me. Everyone has a different situation though I know and some just have to drive a car for various reasons. I will say the city I moved from had very good support for bicycles (Minneapolis) and a lot of my coworkers used to bike when we all worked downtown. Even in the winter, but that takes dedication there! Spikes on the tires to deal with ice on the trails and on streets, negative temps, etc. But a lot of people that lived downtown did it which was cool. I did not live downtown as I did not work downtown when we moved up there so it did not work for me. If we had lived closer to that job I would have been all about it though. I think in mpls, if you live within 5 miles of work downtown it is actually faster to bike anyways. Maybe even from a tad further out depending on direction.
