Default Mis-shift!

So I was doing about 85-86mph..it was around 2-3am in the morning so the freeway was empty and i wanted to get home asap so yes i was going at pretty decent pace. instead of going from 4th to 5th i ended up in 3rd and obviously it wasnt the right gear for the speed. the revs jumped and i obviously felt the car lurch briefly as it banged on the limiter. i clutched in and got it in the correct gear within 2 seconds or so.

i searched around here and noticed that the consensus is that 3rd gear will max out at around 75mph. i was doing about 10mph above that.

i used to drive an AP1 and was used to having that extra 1000RPM of margin. i know that i mechanically over-reved but to what extent? =\ car is 2007 ap2. car drives and idles fine..no abnormal valvetrain noise. i've heard that symptoms of a cracked retainer and damaged springs usually dont show till miles down the road.

i have about 27xxx miles on the car and i was going to take it in at 35000 miles for a valve adjustment...can retainers and springs be inspected during a valve adjustment?

Just go ahead and do your valve adjustment now. That way you'll get your valves adjusted and make sure your retainers didn't crack.

EDIT: Sorry, YES they can be inspected.

Retainers can be inspected when you have the valves adjusted if you ask and the mechanic knows what to look for and how to look (you need a dental mirror to look at the underside).

More than likely you are fine. 85-86mph in 3rd would put you at about 8600-8700rpm...there are some AP2s that are using an AP1 ecu to rev to 9k rpm on occasion.

You are fine if you were at that speed. AP2 retainers are pretty strong. You felt the fuel cut?

Just pop the valve cover and check your retainers. It's no big deal, I've done the same thing several times, and no cracked retainers.
