Misfire Thread
Hey guys, i have an 2000, s2000 with 50,000 miles and I've noticed some misfiring going on. I replaced the plugs, had a valve adjustment done, cleaned the map sensor and have tried using my friends coils, and still nothing. I have all 4 codes on each cylinder. I did a compression test they all checked in at 160 on the dot. and ideas? Thanks.
Ok guys your help is much appreciated. So I recently moved from Cali to Boston and prior to moving out here I changed all my spark plugs/oil...Car has around 100K miles on it...2004. Old plugs actually looked pretty good. I drove the car for about 1 month with no problems in cali and had it shipped to Boston....upon getting the car out here..I felt that it would hesitate a bit more than usually and just chalked it up to the ECU adjusting to the different climate (much more humid in Boston). But 2 days ago my car was running very rough and had a difficult time accelerating and the check engine light came on...I ran the code and it was P0301...so I swapped engine coil 1 with 4 and reset the ECU...the check engine light went off and never came on again but my car is still running rough and actually died 2-3 times at idle.
Your help and ideas are much appreciated...I am thinking of taking it to the dealer but don't want to waste a lot of money.
Thanks for the input in advance!
Cheers

Update: So I swapped the ignition coil from 1 to 4 and reset the ECU...check engine light came on after about a day or two and so I ran the OBDII check...got error codes P0170 and P0172...not sure what is going on here??
I also had these issues almost a month now, 1st encounter car gave me running lean code(1st CEL) took it to my friend's shop re-tighten map sensor(was a little bit loose) also cleaned throttle opening with some cleaning solution and cleared the code. After a week CEL came on again(2nd CEL) showing running lean still, cleared the code at my friend's shop, i was still observing the car. After couple of weeks (3rd CEL) came on again showing random misfire/running lean so first thing i did is took it to the dealer to pull the codes(random misfire/running lean) then brought it back to my friend's shop and we replaced the spark plugs(was pretty damn bad) prolly still the original spark plugs(car has 78k miles) cleared the code(9/1/12). After that week drove the car for a road trip(9/9/12), ran around 250 miles. No CEL so far until Saturday morning CEL came on again Misfire on Cylinder #2 but "no running lean code/random misfire"(4th CEL)(9/15/12) i didn't cleared the CEL, and so i decided to order a set of ignition coils, i just bought the BECK/ARNLEY Part # 1788427 ordered from RockAutoParts $192.31 set shipped. Anyone had use this? Anyways, next day(8/16/12) just later that night borrowed my friend's scanner to check what the CEL is, the codes gave me are misfire on cylinder #2 and P1399 Multi misfire. So i cleared the CEL again and put Lucas fuel injection cleaner additive. Then the next day early morming started the car(sat in the garage from last night when i cleared the CEL) CEL lit up again Monday(5th CEL)(8/17/12) gave me these codes P0300 P1399 P0301 P0302 P0304 so that morning i did switch coil #1 and #3 to see if it change the code, cleared the code. Drove it yesterday afternoon with around 35 miles. So far until today CEL doesn't came on. My replacement coils will be deliver tomorrow. Anyway, im still in the process of troubleshooting it though i know its slow, but i don't drive the car daily and im a very busy guy due to my work so it can wait. I only use the car every mon/sat with just around 5-30 miles total for a day. Hopefully its just the coil packs. Im so tired with this CEL kept coming back on me... 2002 S2000.
And thanks to the fellas here who contributed on this thread, it helps me so far.

I have already gone down the same road as you are going - with much knowledge gained from this website, the resident mechanics who really know the S2000, and much money spent, I have finally got my 2002 with 153,000 miles running great with no CEL's. Below is what I have done, in order of replacement, due to rough idle, multiple mifires, and CEL's.....hope this helps.
replace spark plugs - car ran better but still rough idle and CEL
replace MAP sensor - no change
replace air filter - no change
cleaned throttle body - no change
cleaned IACV - no change
adjusted valves and replaced front O2 sensor - DRASTIC CHANGE: smoothed out the idle and cleared multiple misfire CEL
replaced coil packs - smoothed out the idle even more, especially with A/C on.....car has never run better since I've owned it (3 years)

Hey guys i just did compression test on all cylinder a while ago, here are the numbers (1st time doing this so i did it twice just to make sure i do the right thing
)
also just got my coil packs delivered today but didn't install yet due to my CEL still not coming back up to now since Monday when i reset the codes.
EDIT: And so after 3 hour, i decided to test it again because im not very satisfied with the first results, this time ive got 245 all across. (Warm start, fuel pump fuse out and also i cranked it continuously up to 4secs)
I really dont know why it gave me higher and consistent number this time. Maybe being the fuse is out, warm and cranking continuously...
But im happy with the results...

Hey guys i got the codes again P0300 P1399 P0302 P0304 just tonight first started, the car was parked since monday morning... Im starting to lose my patience with this car, i just bought it a month ago and this is what happening already... help please!
Should i install my new coils or do valve adjustment and replace front o2 sensor? I've read in other thread that it fixed the misfiring issue with just changing the o2 and doing valve adjustment...
EDIT: Installed the new aftermarket coils BECK/ARNLEY Part # 1788427 ordered from RockAutoParts $192.31 set shipped. I've reset the codes again... So far CEL not on..

I just bought my s2k andthe CEL came on, coded out to 300, 301, 302,303 and EGR Valve. I replaqce the spark plugs today, and then reset the CEL by pulling the Back- Up fuse for 30 seconds, ran the Motor for 5 minutes at idle and the light never came back on. Well see if it lights up again. My next step is to replace the coils if it comes back on.
