The intakes are the only ones I replace. The exhaust retainers don't split, because the valves will hit the piston first. Also, the exhaust valves don't float at the same RPM as the intake because of their weight.

IMO:

The retainer splitting over-rev RPM is raised with the 2.2 retainers. Possibly beyond the point in which the exhaust valves bend.
Bill,

While I have the head out, Im going to replace all my retainers and keepers (50km miles on car)

Are you saying that it would be " bad " to replace all the retainers on my head with the thicker ap2 ones? or should I go ap2 intake and ap1 exhaust retainers?

You should have asked in the car number 8 or 9 thread BTW I'm at car #10 with broken retainers.

I would do AP2 retainers on the intake side only.

Putting them on the exhaust side may slightly lower the RPM that bends the exhaust valves in an over rev situation. And it is not necessary.

Intake side is the way to go.

Bill,

How would you like to take a trip to North Carolina? I am serious! I have not really been able to find antone here in Charlotte that I trust that much to do this kind of work.

I have never over reved the engine, I have almost 32K on the car and the valves have never been adjusted and the dealers around here in IMHO are not all that good.

If anyone knows of Bill's long lost or unkown clone around the Charlotte area would you please let me know.

Just gonna say that you should probably drive down to him. It is much harder to work on someones car while you arent in your own garage...with all the tools you use all the time and need.
