Need Engine Number
I do not have the car on hand, I a trying to guide the salesman to find it for me, I was asking about the three digits and whether I can use a known set of numbers to fill in the blanks.
Is the "salesman" looking for an engine or car? I'm still confused what the engine part number has to do with anything or a search for a car. The VIN contains the engine "code" which is either AP1 or AP2. Only 2004 and later cars had the AP2 engine and only in US/Canada (all 2004 and later) and Japan OEM sales, not exports, from 2005 (or 2006). All other cars have the AP1 engine. Just look at the VIN. I'd guess the engine serial number could be important in some import scenarios.

I imagine he is trying to make sure engine is original. Matching Numbers.
Only trouble is, they never matched from the factory. Engine does not have cars vin stamped into it. They took a finished engine off engine line, and dropped it into a finished car. The engine wasn't born destined for a specific car.

"Engine number" still implies a serial number to me, not a part number. Reminds me of my motor boats. There is a serial number molded into the hull (akin to a VIN) and a separate serial number on the outboard motor (since it was technically removable) -- and titles for both. I don't recall how the inboard engines worked.
