The JDM ECU's (Mugen, Spoon, J's) eliminate the emmisions controls, but are "tuned" for 2.0L They can't be reprogrammed just like the stock PCM. You would still be able to use a VAFC if you wanted, but gains would also be minimal.

The AP1 PCM will run a 2.0L, but it's not optimized for the 2.2. Reving a 2.2 to 9k for any length of time is another issue, an idea that I'm not sold on. Especially if you are going to be tracking the car. There have been several 2.2L failures in the so-cal track scene from a AP1 PCM in a AP2.

JDM ECU vers EMS, cost is about the same. I guess I will be looking closer at EMS or other EMS systems. A track car will just not have any emissions stuff on it at all. So a perm CEL is a problem. MAybe I can figure out how to disable all of that stuf myself on the OEM PCM.

Thanks

It all depends on what you want out of the car. 230whp can be seen with a intake, header, exhuast, throttle body and ecu flash. If you are staying within those mods then I dont see a need. If you are like me tho, I rather have a Ems right of the bat. I am then able to tune each part to work correct and be most efficent. Then once you are able to get into the motor you will have total control. A good tuner will make all the difference in the world. I would do the AEM EMS if you plan on doing some mods that will require it. Either way both setups have the pros and cons.

Well said ERL. Each do have their pro's and cons

It seems that you really need to do your homework on this so you can decide which one would suit your needs better.

I personally would prefer the standalone but I also have seen very bad failures, not on S2000's, where the person was too cheap to have a professional tune their car and tried to themselves. Well in no time flat they were in need of some major repairs.

If you go this route make sure you get someone that has tuned the AEM EMS before. Maybe even ask to see other cars that he has tuned and ask their opinions about him/her.

To answer your question before you'd be best to look at the AEM EMS 1052. If you plan on doing more modifications in the future and require a retune go with the 1052U so you have the wideband.
