Default New to Me S2000

Hey everyone, I have been doing some looking around on here for some of this stuff and decided it might just be easiest to make a post of my questions. Some don't necessarily meet the section requirements so feel free to relocate my post if its in the horribly wrong section.

So I got a 2000 black on black S2000 last week with 57,000 miles and a pretty good deal, around 10,000. I have been working on cars actively for 7 years or so and I have a little bit of work to get this car where I want it for now. Here are my questions:

It seems the electronic door locks aren't working anymore. I hear them trying to click when I push the button. Are the actuators simply tired? Is this common? And are they tough to get to? My last/other car is a early 90's Saturn I have been autoxing for years and if you take an interior panel off you are certain to break a retaining clip or two making the panel shake forever.

I need to replace the top, I have found two write ups about this and plan on doing the glass replacement. Don't really have any questions about it but if anyone has additional comments let me know. I realize its probably not a fun task, Ill have a full weekend set aside.

The radio just started acting weird, it basically stopped working. The sound is loudest at about 25% and by loudest I mean if I hold my ear up to the speaker I can tell its trying to make noise. The previous owner had a system in the back which I will be removing and I already disconnected yet it did not fix the problem. Could it have blown the reciever or is there some other common problem?

Will be replacing the tires, 225/50/16 frt and 245/50/16 rear will work if I have read correctly. I assume the speed sensor is off the rear axle and this will throw off the speed by 1% or so according to the tire calc.

Pretty much all for now. Any common problems I should check out or plan to try and prevent? Thanks for the input, later.

I don't think I've heard of the door lock issue frequently enough to stick in my head as a common problem. But the search works pretty good...see what hits "door locks" returns.

If you are pretty skinny and/or flexible, you can save a ton of time on the soft top replacement by not removing the roll hoops and all the associated plastic. You may even be able to get away without having to pull the seats...but those come out pretty quick as many thieves have discovered.

Post in the electronics forum about the radio...lots of smart radio folks in there.

The speed sensor is in the tranny...but small change in diameter will not throw the speedo off all that much. They all have some error in them anyway.

On an early car...you should adjust the valves and look for cracked retainers. That's a common result of a mechanical over rev, which is all too easy to do in this car. Do a search on cracked retainers...there are pics out there of what to look for.

Thanks for the advice, I looked into the retainer issue and will get the valve cover off to check on that as soon as im done with the AF training im at. Now I just wanted to clarify, does this only happen with an overrev caused by downshifting into the wrong gear? Is it safe to get near the redline on these engines now and then?

Also how are the interior panels for taking off? Any pesky plastic retainers that often break off if you mess with them?

You can absolutely run to redline when you feel like it.

We have had reports of the AP1 retainers starting to crack without over rev at higher miles.

The AP2 retainers are thicker and a direct replacement for the AP1 retainers. Only the intake side need beefing up...rarely do the exhaust side crack.
