Check your fuel pulsation damper, it would lead to stutter and inconsistent vtec engagement especially in lower gears.

...Yeah, whatever... My hood ion field extrapolators needed refueling...

Fuel pulsation damper is a little metal bulb with a plastic cap that holds the fuel supply banjo to the fuel rail. Go look!

Does the car feel slower to you or is the VTEC crossover just more smooth with the same amount of acceleration? You mentioned running it low on oil, a friend of mine who owns a MY00 and a track prep'd Prelude told me that if the oil level gets too low on a DOHC VTEC engine that the crossover will feel abrupt and/or delayed since there is not enough oil to pressure the solonoid. It could be you got used to a more abrupt crossover on low oil and now that your topped off its feeling too smooth? Just a stab at the dark here since I have no idea why the situation you describe is possible. If the car feels sluggish then you might think about a compression test to see if everything is tip top in there or you are just nuts

How exactly do you propose he check the damper? Other than holding the fuel line to the rail, no test is available.

With all the guessing in this thread you need these.
