Part of the issue with running low octane fuel is that in order for the ECU to retard timing, it sensor first has to detect knock. It will try to retard the timing to eliminate it. It will then readvance the timing, the sensor will hear knock. and then retard the timing again. Long term, probably not a great scenario.

I have a friend that fills 4 gallons of 87 and 6.5 gallons of 93, he claims that with this mix he gets 91 octane and saves money and the car doesn't ping.
actually you need 8 gal. of 93 with 4 gal. of 87 to make the 91 oct. max

8 x 93 = 744
4 x 87 = 348
348+744 = 1092
1092/12 = 91 oct.

If you run a lower grade octane it will begin to knock after some time. However, All gasoline is refined to the same state. When you drive through a "tank town" all the gasoline tanks contain the same liquid. It is the additives that give you your octane. If you are going to say take a weekend trip. I say use the lower grade and save some money for the long distance driving. You will lose your H/P when you rev high so when you are ready to let the car out. Be sure it has a better grade of fuel. Don't expect the consistent performance if you switch to a lower grade. By the way, the additives are just a few drops compared to the several gallons of gas they mix with. it's a Gas company thing. (i.e. they can charge more)

I use 93 octane, and if I listen carefully, I can hear the tick.

I just use 93 on my car. Always used that with turbo cars and just got used to it. Also most places by me have 87, 89 and then 93. Some places have 92 but it is like 1 or 2 cents cheaper a gallon so just wind up going with 93 even if it is not needed. Can't hurt.

you'll start knocking at higher rpm.

91 is crap as it is. this car should be running 98 octane just like how Evo owners manual suggest running 101 octane, but 93 octane is ok.
Does it actually say in the manual to use 100+ octane?
