Odd Noise coming from left rear wheel
Although this may not be convenient, next time it makes the noise (without a doubt), once you get home, try to pop off the wheel cap and "CAREFULLY" feel the center hub area through the opening. If it is the bearing in the wheel, it will be quite HOT, much more so than the side that doesn't make the noise. DON'T BURN YOURSELF. Start with a very fast, light touch. If it's not too hot to the touch, you may be able to eliminate the wheel bearing.
Excellent advice and very convenient--center caps are off already. Though I drove all day without a groan from the rear end I suspect before long I'll hear the noise again. I'll bring my IR temp guage with me in preperation for the inevitable.
I suspect that even though you don't hear anything, "IF" one of your wheel bearings is going, it will show a much hotter reading than the other side. I have had a bad bearing in the past (another car) and it almost burns your finger to touch it after driving it for an hour or two. Highway driving is where the bearing will work the hardest. If the temps are more or less the same from one side to the other, there's a good chance you can eliminate these, however, I suppose there is also a small chance that both sides are going. Most guys who have done the hub nut greasing and torquing have found that both sides needed tightening.
