I havent seen anyone disect the purolator, and I am glad it is working out for you-especially that you have done oil analysis.
That doesn't mean it hasn't been done. I've been here for nearly 5 years. Very early in this forum's history, the Purolator was indeed analyzed carefully and it ranked right up there in the top few, hence I started to use it very early on in my car's life and have done so ever since. I wish I could pull up that thread, but I don't think the archived threads go back that far.
We are all within our rights to use whatever products we believe to be the best. But let's not put things up on pedestals simply because they are "Honda". Not all things that Honda dictates are the "best". Please note that I have NOT slammed the Honda PCX filter, only to say that it's not something special or magical. There are other products that have proven to work just as well.

Should we revere the fact that Honda (car division) has NOT to this very day, come up with a dedicated rear diff fluid? They have to get it from their motorcycle division and ONLY long after the S2000 had been in the marketplace. Shall we put Honda motorcycle hypoid gear oil up on a pedestal? I think not. And while we're at it, let's talk about Honda MTF for the tranny. Many S2000 owners have used this fluid without complaint (myself included), however, many other people have also found that their tranny issues have been resolved by using other brands (GMSMFM for one). I'll bet those people have not put Honda MTF up on a pedestal.
It's perfectly fine to be "anal", unless it comes down to influencing others to become too narrowly focussed that only one truth is ever visible.

Let's take a look at this statement:
but I am sure they have spent enough time researching and stress testing to offer us the most cost effective and reliable product.
Are you so sure? Shall we talk about the S2000 rear diff? There are countless threads where owners have been less than enamoured by this little gem. I'm not one of them, but there are many well respected forum users here who don't think much about this diff. And shall we talk about Honda's research into the fluid change regimen for this diff? Well, I think I've gone on long enough on this. The answers to this and many other Honda "peculiarities" have been discussed ad nauseum.

Let's take a look at this statement:
The Honda filter is unique in its build and quality.
If memory serves me correctly, the PCX filter for the S2000 was not the original recommended filter. The PCX came about as a result of Honda's original faux pas (a little oversight, if you will). It's only "unique" because it was put out to cover a previous "shortcoming".

I am a Honda fan and Honda products are very, very good, but are they the "end all, be all"? Simply put .................. NO!

Wow, you've di-sected my statement but missed the point.

All I am saying is that "I" have not found a "better" filter and what I said was more as a guide to help a fellow owner pick the best thing for their car. The OP sounded a little inexperienced and it was just easier to encourage to use a product I (and obviously many others) have had experience with. It definitely will not do any damage to the car, the FRAM on the other hand I would not trust.

I havent seen the purolator thread, please let me know if you come across it again as I am always up for better products.

Regarding the diff fluid or mtf reference. Honda decided to use what they had best at the time. Now, on the other hand there is a better product out there than what honda recommended originally--and my car hasn't seen the honda fluid ever since i changed it when the car had 5,000mi on the odo. Putting products recommended by honda in your car won't do any harm, but if you put the wrong manual tranny fluid (for example) might have irreversible effect. That is why I enjoy these forums so much--a lot of people experiment and disect everything to find what works best; and I have a lot of appreciation and respect for such.

Xviper, I have lots of respect for your knowledge, and you have helped me before--but I do not appreciate having my statements called "foolish" or disected. If there is info about a new better product--provide it; don't put me down for suggesting what works.

Maybe in my original response I should have noted that "I strongly discourange other products"--unless the person using the filter has done some research. I would like to avoid the "whatever fits" mentality.

I was about to give another long rebuttal to something that again has been bent out of shape and misconstrued because someone has gotten their tail in a HUGE knot. But, nope, not this time. Simply not worth it. You feel however you want to feel and you interpret things in whatever way you want to interpret it. I'm stopping here.
