also, 0w40 is NOT a recommended weight for this car. in fact, our local tribologist RR recommended against using ANY oil weight on this car that has that large a difference in weight from the cold to operating weights.
You are right in saying its not recommended by Honda.
I think this the Road Rage recommendation you are referring to:

Fram is NOT the filter you want to use on this car. They are cheap wal-mart filters. S2000 needs a high pressure oil filter. I would drive the car very cautiously back to the oil change place and tell them to do it right.

Honda PCX filters are like 6 bucks from handa (yes, handa )
Good advice here and elsewhere in this thread. You DO NOT want the PLM OEM Filtech made filter.

The ONLY oil filter I would consider using on the S is the Toyo Roki made PCX OEM high pressure filter.

If I were in a bind I would consider a green HAMP but switch it out as soon as I had access to the PCX.

I think the problem is that he is in Trinidad. It will take him a while to get Honda filters. Trinis2001, is there a Honda dealer in Trinidad?

There is a Honda dealer in Trinidad, but they never sold S2000s, so it is not a "supported" car here. My particular car was brought in from the UK by the owner of the Honda dealer here, and I bought it off of him.

I have had to bring in the shop and electrical manuals for them. They do not have the exact filter for the S. So I have ordered a few from Manchester Honda on the web.

I wil leave the oil for now though it may be a bit heavy on the hot side, maybe it will cause a slightly higher pressure - all the more reason I want to change the Fram ASAP.

Thanks for all the good info folks. Won't be making this mistake again!

Bill

This was posted 2 years ago.
Advances in VI improvers has continued in those 2 years, no doubt.
Especially with those big oil companys as Mobil, Shell, etc.
Even IF the current Mobil 1 0W-40 shears down a bit... and it turns out to be a 30 weight or so, no problem there. Key word : IF
I am by NO means a tribologist, nore do I pretend to be one.
I did do a LOT of reading on BITOG, the "Home of tribologists" and asked some questions there.
That made me make an informed decision about what oil to use for my S2000.
And I am happy to share that.

So, IMO
Get another filter, the PCX one.
Don't worrie about the oil.
No, that's not the post I'm referring to. Someone explicitly asked RR if 0w40 was ok for our cars. The short answer is, NO, not really.

And what was the reasoning behind this answer?

I've been changing my oil with mobil1 extended performance 5w-30 and mobil 1 filter.

Yesterday after doing some research i switched to valvoline max life synthetic 10w-30 and a pure one filter and am impressed. valvetrain noise reduced by like 50%.

for valvoline maxlife synt.

It has to do with the drastic difference between the cold and normal temp viscosities. Essentially, even at operating temp, the 0w40 may be thinner than is really recommended for our cars. This would be further confirmed by the fact that he said 5w40 is a thinner oil than 10w30 at operating temp, and that 5w40 is most often used more in a racing application for our cars than a daily driver every day type situation.

On BITOG Mobil is "known" for making valvetrains noisy.
Lots of reports from ppl saying its noisy with Mobil 1 or quiet with other oils.
I have not been able to find any reasoning behind it.
(Imagine an internetforum as big as S2Ki on oil alone )

@ Wisconsin : the Visc of my Shell 0W-40 at 100C is 13.5 Cst.
According to a list found on BITOG all 10W-30 are thinner.
Here is a link to that list:

I really dont know for sure I'm going to use the 0W-40 again.. I might even go to 0W-30, to "free-up some horses" by the thinner oil at operating temp => less pump loss. That said, I still have another 6 liters of the 0W-40 sitting here so I think i'm going to use that up first. The UOA will hopefully provide me with some data on how my 0W-40 did in the F20C. Patience my friend
