10w30 castrol edge with titanium(gold bottle) and my oil consumption has been cut by a significant amount. I was using mobil 1 and went through 2 quarts in about 5k miles, switched over to castrol edge and used about 300ml's of oil in 2k miles and under a quart over 5k (2 track days on that interval as well). The car see's 9k regularly 1st through 3rd if given the chance.

I use 10-30 castrol. eats like 3 quarts between oil changes. Its just regular. Mobile 1 will dissapear a lot faster though. I'm always checking my oil level before v teching. I kind of like it in a way as the engine will see new oil between changes. This is another reason I go 5k between them.
3 quarts in 5k miles is acceptable. You might reduce it by moving to Casrol Edge (if you want to stick with Castrol brand), an ap2 (04-05) valvecover and pcv can help too. How old is your pcv valve ?.
Tried Castrol Edge Titanium, went through something like 2 quarts in under 2k miles. AP1 2000. Not only that it degraded pretty fast and was almost sludgy when I changed it out at 3,500kms. I didn't, vtec all that much either. So I put FEO back in and so far so good, but that's about 400kms-500kms ago.

smoking on cold start could be your valve seals, oil seeps down the stems after shut down and burns up at start-up.

Are you suppose to blow compressed air into the combustion chamber before the "dry test"

The pcv valve is different on the AP2 valve cover. Some speculate that it was changed to reduce oil consumption. The F22s dont seem to use as much oil as the F20s.

I did away with my PCV and don't use ANY oil between changes. None. I replaced the PCV with a 90 deg. brass fitting with a hose that runs to a clear canister filter, and then runs under the car to the rear to vent the gasses. I removed the breather from the VC to the intake inlet tube and vented it through a catch can to the atmosphere. I think the vacuum on the PCV and VC vent both extract a lot more oil than people think. I cleaned my TB butterfly too and it stays oil free on the back side now also. Try it, it may solve your consumption issue too. I'll post a pic of my setup tomorrow.
