Oil consumption

New short block (old valves and cyl head) and the engine is running great! Have not burned a drop of oil in 7000 miles and my tale pipes show no trace of soot or carbon even after three weeks of daily driving.
My guess is it was the rings some how.

Maybe....the main reason that you don't burn oil now is that you got the MY04+ block, which doesn't burn oil. I'm really curious to know the change the made to improve the block. Was it something as simple as tightening tolerences?
I think there are two issues that make a difference. Break-in (not the procedure, but the result) varies widely making a big difference in consumption. I also believe that the scoring problem that typically destroys the #4 cylinder bore happens in varying degrees to a number of cars that continue to be used.
If I had a serious oil consumption problem I would get a compression test and cylinder inspection with a borescope.
BTW, switching back and forth between synthetic/mineral oil will not cause a problem but differences in additives and viscosity will show varying results.
Yea but it was specificly mention by woodwork that the block was changed from MY04+ and that any new blocks(even for 2.0L) would get the updated block. If I recall correctly it was to deal with oil burning and other issues.
The difference in this case is that while there may be some with the MY00-03 block that don't burn oil, many do. With the MY04+ block extremely few burn any oil. I think I've only heard of one that did so.

so would that be under the TSB???? warranty???
any further updates on this??
my car was relatively light on oil..a JDM 2001 with 20,000miles..
however in the last 2-3000miles it has started to use quite a bit more and I need to top every 200-300miles 2 or 3 X's on the dipstick. Have noticed an oily smell from the engine bay.. the dipstick pops up regularly. Using redline synthetic..
Car was on the dyno recently and producing plenty of power with no problems

Yeah, I got an update. The car was brought into the dealer 2 weeks ago for an oil change. I notified the dealer that the car consumed about 5 to 5 1/2 quarts of oil in 4,700 miles. The response was "they tend to do that, and it's normal". I asked that they drain a sample of oil into a supplied container for an analysis.
So they drained the oil and filled the sample bottle with fresh Mobil 1,
they made a small mess in the engine compartment,
and they dented my car for good measure.
This test was critical because it looked like it might be be the last one I can do (and test) before the factory warranty expires. It was also because the last (successful) test was on the previous oil change where the engine didn't burn too much oil. Now if I do a test I'll have to:
1. Change the oil way early (less than the 4,200) recommended by Blackstone
2. Realize if damage was done, that it may not show up all that well if it happened before the last drain.
3. Drive the car a hell of a lot more than I normally do.
The saving grace now is that while I haven't driven all that much since the oil change I haven't noticed any major consumption yet.
