Mobil1 is okay, Penzoil Platinum fully synthetic is better than Mobil1 and 40 cents cheaper at Walmart. 10W30 is the correct weight, but you can also use 5W40. All model years hold 5 quarts to 5 1/4 quarts.

how much does the F20C hold?
According to the Helm manual, 4.8 without filter, 5.1 with filter and 5.8 at overhaul.

is this a 2003 related problem? i have a 2004, and 20,000 miles on the clock, i use 10/30 wt chevron dyno oil, never, i rerpeat, never have added oil and i change it every 3,000-4,000 miles. the pipes are clean, just have a little soot on them, but no oil or carbon. i suspect this is a normal condition.

use of oil more than 1 qt in 1500 miles in my book is excessive, no facts to back that up, i would think there was an issue with block/rings.

FWIW:

I have an '03 with 15.5k miles on it. Been running 10w-30 Mobil 1 since 8500 miles and have added 2 quarts in 7000 miles. The car is autocrossed heavily.

here's my experience:

I own a 2003, the dealership drained the factory oil at 1114 miles, so I lost the benefits of the factory additives. I ran mobile 1 reg. oil until 4226 miles. Over that time I burned very little oil, with one exception.... I took a trip to Oregon and put around 725 miles on the car and I was nearly a quart low when I got back. the dealership said that was normal for the S to burn through a quart every 1000 miles.

I switched to full synthetic at 4226 miles, I VTEC weekly during the summer, but have never tacked the car. I don't put more than 5500 on the car, driving it everyday in a year. I have only added a 1/4 of a quart at the most, and only twice since switching to Full Synthetic 10w30.

the car runs great! the early switch to Full Synthetic pushed out my full break in period to around 25,000 miles - I'm currently at 13,500.

I realize that there are several things here that are not recommended, but to date I have seen nothing that would indicate a problem.

I've tried Mobil1 Full Synth, Valvoline SynthPower, and I'm currently running Castrol Syntec 10W30 without adding a drop since the last oil change in April. I'm due for and oil change this month.

thanks to everyone who posted a reply to this thread, it was interesting to hear about others experience with oil and their S.

I have 43,000 miles on my MY03...and I CONSISTENTLY burn 1 quart every 1K-2K miles.

Does this signal a problem, or is it just "normal" for this car.

I like to think my engine is in TIP TOP shape.

Why not

The ring's will seat themselve's within the first few thousand mile's of normal everyday street driving. The cam bearing's will be seated, main's, rod's etc. Within 5-10k mile's, the motor should be fully worn-in. After that, it start's "wearing out".

A motor will run it's best when it is properly "worn-in". I'm not sure what you expect from your engine in between 10-25k mile's? If you don't properly seat the ring's within the first several thousand mile's, (or less) they might not seat themselve's as well as they would if the driver drove it a little bit aggressive from day one.

Remember, this is a high performance sport's car. If it was just an ordinary sedan, it wouldn't matter, you would just get in and drive it off the lot and not think about seating the ring's.

One quart every 1,500 mile's is a little bit excessive. I believe these engine's may have slight inconsistency's in tolerance. This may explain why you burn 1 quart every 1,500 mile's and I burn maybe 1/4 quart in nearly 2k mile's of spirited driving.

Or maybe I did a good job at seating my ring's
