Default oil level reading

I have noticed that lately when checking the oil dipstick, I cannot seem to get the readings to match on both sides of the dipstick... Ever since buying this car I have always waited a whole night before checking the oil levels in the mornings, before I have driven the car to ensure an accurate reading without issues. Well, now it seems impossible to get an even oil level on each side of the dipstick. If you are facing the front of the engine bay, it is the left side(closest to the block) of the dipstick that reads full and it is the right side that reads about 1 diamond low from full. SO which side is lying? I just don't want to add too much oil, so maybe someone has a remedy or is this simply due to the engine being tilted?

Thanks in advance, MH

You read the stick from it's highest level. It looks this way because of the engine being mounted at an angle.

no, read it from the lower reading. theres a way to get this to go away, just keep wiping the stick and putting it back in, after a few, it will be similiar on both sides, not sure why this works, just go ahead and do it!

I always read from the front, i.e. the higher reading.

Regardless, you're only talking about a single X, which can be accounted for in a myriad of other ways, such as a couple degrees of slope on the garage floor. Don't worry about it.

The engine sits at an angle in the car. When you let the car sit over night the oil collects in the pan. The highest the oil is on the stick it was you should be looking at when the car as sat overnight. Let it run for a second then recheck. The oil will be the same on both sides of the stick.

Honda says to check the oil every time you add gas. So I guess they expect the engine to be hot and turned of only for a minute or so. Both sides of dipstick seem to be the same under this condition.

always check the lowest reading, if you notice on the highest one there will be oil pretty far up on the stick because the stick has to go through the head

As long as it's between the "add" and "full" mark, carry on. Geez, one lousy "X". The world's coming to an end.
