John.

Does not sound like the altenator. Rattle and oil light and working electrics should cover that.

Get a new mechanic no 1.

PM Robrob, he just got a new (used) engine, I am sure it was $$.
This post pretty much says it all. No way it was the alternator, though I do sympathize with you being in denial over blowing up your engine for a failure to check your oil.

Get a good mechanic to see exactly what is wrong, then drop a 2.2L motor in if you can't rebuild yours for cheap (or stroke it out )

I've no problems with the slams/chastising, so no worries everyone. I'll give an update when I have relevant information. Thank you for your input.

I've had my battery die on me while I was driving. That is an entirely different set of symptoms.

When the battery dies (or alternator stops charging, causing the battery to die), the car will slowly shut down - EPS first, then dash lights, etc. The car will run like crap, but it will still run - albeit, with very little power - pretty much until it's shut off or the battery is too drained to provide spark.

That's nothing like what the OP described. The battery/alternator dying isn't going to cause smoke to come out of the engine
if your alternator dies. you would get a battery light .

if your battery dies and alternator is still working you should still be able to drive it with no issues. than again my closest situation to dead battery with engine still running is when i swap batteries with engine still run and had no issues. just never drove it with no battery

I assure you, if the battery dies and the alternator is still working, you will indeed have problems - as that's exactly what happened to me (and yes, I pulled the alternator and battery to have both tested - alternator was good, battery not so much).
