Ah, a misunderstanding. The rear mount is off and the trans is not securely fixed to the car, I just didn't disconnect the whole driveline. Between your picture and the words, I assumed 'out' meant completely disconnected from the car.

Driveline is a vague term. To me drive line means trans, and driveshaft, and dif.

So what parts did you leave in?

Vague is true. The car is on a 4 post lift. The diff, driveshaft and trans are all still connected to each other.

During removal, the trans was unbolted from the engine, supported by a jack for removal/adjustment during, the trans mount removed and then the engine pulled out the top with an engine hoist. This is how I've done it twice (the first time on jack stands. Though I can not do anything in 15 minutes like you , both times were pretty easy.

This is the first time I'm putting an engine back in and I was planning on assembly being the reverse of disassembly If you tell me pulling the trans (leave drive shaft and diff in place?) is worth it, with the extra mucking about with those damn cap screws (not looking at it, are those on the trans side or diff side? I just know they suck and I'll probably end up cutting one off) and the shifter linkage and allI will. I'm just asking out loud if it is unreasonable for me to expect to put the engine back in the reverse of my removal?

If any coolant line is touching anything, vibration will wear right through it.

Where the heck do you have this connected? I'm about to drop a 2.2 in my AP1 and I'd like to have everything put back together like this, but i can't figure out where you are grabbing it, or what you are using? please let me know. thanks.

Update: It is indeed possible to put the engine back in with the transmission in place. The preferred way, if you know in advance you're pulling then engine, is certainly to remove the trans. However in this case since we had pulled the head first, then the engine when we found they were both warped. So they came out in pieces, and pretty easily. Putting it back in took a whole bunch of swearing, but there just enough room to do so.

I had my head off and tried the two bolts in the head in the middle. Worked easily and perfect. Thanks Billman!
