Default Questions regarding tuning

My MY00 is stock, except for a K&N drop in Cone filter and removed air box top.

I've been reading around about my ECU running too rich, and about using an electronic device like a V-AFC to help with that, and also resetting my VTEC engagement.

To help out a layman, could someone help me with the best route to go with? Should I get an 02-03 ECU which supposedly makes the car run leaner, or go with an electronic unit, or both?

Which is the best unit to go with? The V-AFC, or V-AFC II?

I've read that setting the VTEC to 5400 is best for stock-like NA setups like mine, so how easy is it to change back to stock if I just want to drive around normally and switch to lower VTEC engagement for more aggressive driving?

Thanks!

Love, Justin

Moving to main UTH. Technical is for very detailed and specific application procedures. You are enquiring about products (which would normally get moved to S2000 Talk) but you also want to know how to go about accomplishing a goal in some generalized ways, so I'll keep it in UTH.

This engine was designed to run a bit rich for safety's sake. If you don't care for safety, then I guess you could say it's running "too" rich. A VAFC will serve this purpose and putting it back is just a matter of removing the device or "zeroing" it. You need to have it tuned properly for it to work well. You just can't start plugging in numbers and taking a wild guess.

sorry for posting in wrong place, and thanks for the help, but I do understand those basics. I understand about the need for tuning and whatnot, I'm more inquiring as to whether I need an 02-03 ECU upgrade along with it, how easy it is to change the options back to stock on the fly (while driving) and what the difference is between the V-AFC 1 and 2.

I think that the differences between the 1 and 2 is that the 2 looks a little different, has a few more features and maybe a couple more tuning points...

although I'm not sure on this...and there is no reason you would need an 02-03 ECU to go with this, it would work perfectly fine with your 00 ECU.

if you get the "plug and play frog harness" then switching it back to stock will be as simple as unpluging the harness and removing the VAFC unit

As far as swapping between normala nd aggressive modes, you do that with your foot. VTEC and the high tuning graph won't become active unless you are close to whole open throttle.

For what you wnat I would recommend the 02-^ ECU. It will have most of what you want already tuned in. Then you could use the V-AFC for fine adjustments when tuning on a dyno. The II is a just a newer model with more tuning points. It's better but not a necessity.
