Questions on TSB-83: Leaky Air Conditioner
The following was originally posted in 'S2000 Talk' but didn't get much action. Basically, I have two concerns:
a) This is an infrequent problem . . . is corrosion of the passenger side floor a real concern?
b) My A/C works fine . . . should I leave it alone or risk having the dealer do the work?
Sorry for the repost, but I would like to avoid any problems if possible.
Regards,
Michael

TSB-83: Leaky Air Conditioner - - - Your Experience
For the first time in almost two years of ownership, my S has shown a leak in the passenger compartment. It was a particularly hot and humid summer in New York, which I am sure, explains the emergence of the problem.
My dilemma is whether or not to have TSB-83 done. I am not overly concerned with the occasional leak on my wife's feet . . . I'll buy her new shoes (j/k). My concern is over the potential for corrosion of the passenger compartment floor from the leak.
Has anyone had this particular TSB done? If yes, were you satisfied with your A/C after the repair. I realize that this is somewhat dependent on the dealer provided service.
Any opinions on the chances for corrosion of the floor from an occasional leak? I have factory floor mats, which I'm hoping will block most of the water from reaching the carpet/floorpan.
Thanks in advance for your opinions.
Regards,
Michael

I think what this TSB deals with is what we in the A/C industry refer to as "water blowoff". Water blow-off is when the moisture that is removed from the air doesn't run down the fin surface in the evaporator (the coil under the dash) and into the drain, but instead releases in the air stream and into the ductwork. This can happen for any number of reasons, such as a dirt/oily evaporator and high air velocities. This can be a real problem on days with really high humidity (or in Engineer's speak - when the wet bulb temperature is high).
To avoid having a dealer perform this TSB, on humid days, don't run the fan on the higher speeds, and use the "recirc" setting on your A/C and make sure that the drain hose that comes out of the evaporator and under the car remains free to drain (no kinks and/or blockages).
I haven't had this problem, but many have. I wouldn't let the dealer do it if you don't have the problem. All they do is seal up the joints in the pastic and make them water proof.

I had it done last month becasue I was getting the condensation drip onto the passenger side floor. It took care of the probem. I seemed to only happen on very very hot an humid days when the air was a full blast. Fixed now!
