Default Rebuilding brake calipers. How perfect do the pistons have to be?

I took apart my front calipers today and removed the pistons and seals etc. I am waiting on the brand new seals to come in. How perfect do the pistons have to be? One of them has a slight nick on the bottom edge of it and both have some discoloration(can't really feel it though) on the sides of the pistons.

Also the one caliper has a slight groove or something on the inside portion where the piston would go. Would I need to most likely replace the pistons as well? Or would just the brand new seals and cleaning it out plus new grease be all that is needed?

Trying to make my brakes as good as new all around.

So I bought new brake master cylinder, new techna fit brake lines, new pads, new stoptech rotors and ate fluid to do a complete clutch job. I bought rear rebuild kit as well but not sure if I will bother with those as I haven't had any issues from the rear brakes.

just clean them up with emery cloth. if you cant feel the grove with your fingernail your most likely ok. but unless your calipers where frozen rebuilding them is not going to improve your stopping

Caliper was seized before which is why I'm rebuilding them. Groove inside the caliper itself I can definitely feel easily.

if its not on the piston its ok. if it is then replace the piston because it will ripe the seal. if its in the bore u will be ok. just clean the rust from the piston and put it back together. I just use brake fluid as lube when siding the piston back into the bore. some pitting on the piston is ok to. always good idea after you put it back together to pump the brake and check for leaks before you drive it. also if you rebuild the back calipers don't use the dorman seal they have the wrong kit listed for the s2000.

My experience is that pitted pistons work (depends on the amount of piting...) but not for long.
I had to work on the rear calipers again within a year, with pitted pistons.
After I used new pistons (and new seals.. again) they have been fine for 2 years.
There is a coating (chrome?) on the pistons.
