This really does help. I have an 01' with 70k and this really helped reduce the "notchiness". Of course, how much of a difference is dependent on many variables and parameters.

so i finally got around to doing this lastnight n let me tell ya, wat a HUGE difference! so much smoother. i have an '01 and when i took the shifter out, the grease was dried up and crusty. but now its all lubed and greased and feels almost new. goodjob on the writeup SakiGT.

this is what i did to get the white ring+boot out. i stuck a smaller flathead down between the boot and ring where the arrows are, becareful not to puncture the boot. and just pry it out corner at a time. and they would come out together, which made it alot easier than taking the boot then ring out.

+1 that's how i've always done it. i've removed that ring 3 times and haven't broken a clip yet

Is there any alternative to the Shin Etsu grease and/or the Urea greas? Would conventional grease do?
I used a Redline high temp grease instead of urea and it worked great. The other stuff is worth having around for the top seals.

Got quote on the Shin Etsu and Urea at Gardena Honda (Socal), they wanted $27.10 and $20.15 respectively. With tax that's $51.86!

I ordered from "yourhondaparts" on ebay for $12.25 (Shin Etsu) & $8.20 (Urea) + $7.95 shipping = $28.40 (saved $23.46). Might be able to get this cheaper elsewhere or use other brands, but ordering on ebay was eeeeeeasy

Note on the shipping, "yourhondaparts" will combine shipping, $6.95 for 1st item + $1.00 for each additional item. I spoke with Ryan at their # 1-866-350-5710, he told me to order both items but don't pay immediately, just wait for him to send a combined invoice.

Thanks for the write-up Saki GT

I bought the Urea grease for $12 plus tax at Honda of Concord. It feels better... Maybe half as good as a fluid change.

You can get urea grease and shin etsu grease from hardtopguy or handaacessories.com for good prices. Don't get shafted by your dealer.

Nice write-up!

If your plastic ball end is worn out, Spoon makes a reinforced metal ball end that includes the whole shift lever.

So what does it mean if you have done this, changed your transmission oil, and still have a notchy 2nd and 6th gear? Should I grease shifter from the bottom end?
