Regrease shifter DIY
For a more noticeable improvement in shifting feel, after regreasing leave out the inner rubber boot. This is the one held down by the notorious white plastic ring.
I pulled the inner boot on my car and noticed a much bigger improvement than the regrease alone (which I had done a while earlier). There’s zero resistance when moving from gear to gear making fingertip shifts even easier.
One caveat: I know from reading the short shifter threads that this boot keeps the shifter from resonating and rattling, but I have no rattles/noises after removing mine. I’m using the OEM shift lever. YMMV.

Did this yesterday, not the huge difference I was hoping for. I went as far as polishing the ball and replacing the cap which didn't do much. Maybe once the grease works in it will feel better, 1st and 2nd are a little less notchy though which is nice!
Just did this too! I didnt use the urea grease and just used mobil1 synthetic grease (lack of anything else/laziness) and replaced the pivot point plastic. I only used about a spoonfull of grease, didnt see a need to use more. Could be wrong on that but time will tell. So far though it made a night and dawn difference! It did help quite a bit with casual shifting even though it was probably the wrong grease. Could someone tell me any major downfalls with my poor choice?
Oh and for those bolts that are a pia, I just used a cordless impact (electric ofcourse) and it worked fine. You can see if you can put the car into reverse and it should hold the shifter down. I dont really know how this keeps it down but it works! Also the plastic cap just snapped on for me, didnt use warm water or anything. But its fairly warm here in Texas right now so must be why I got away with it. Removing it was easy! Vice grips+force. Pretty easy to break

I'm guessing you broke tha tabs? Here's a good resource for looking up part numbers:

FWIW, you really can do without the ring, it holds the rubber boot snug for sound insulation but I don't use it on my stock shifter set up. I just have the boot in place with the bottom of it greased with silicone grease, it seems to shift smoother and with a bit less effort.

Thank you for the link. Yes, 2 of the tabs were already broken from the prior owner (i assume). I've only had the car for a few months. Yeah i read that some people don't use the ring but when the boot lifts up from shifting, the sound of the vibration that comes out is unbearable. Did this happen to anyone else? The boot just doesn't want to stay put without the ring.. Does the silicon grease help the boot stick to the frame?

Is this waht the part is? "O-Ring"
Thanks again.
