Whoa Chief sounds like there may be other issues with your shifter. I've run the car without the rubber accordion boot, leather shift boot and foam insulation inside the shifter well, there is no noise coming up that I'd describe as "unbearable". The silicone grease helps the rubber boot move around the bottom of the shift well, it actually stays in place on the shift lever with friction and the leather boot over it. You should do a complete remove, regrease and reinstall of the shift lever to check for other problems.

I just picked up the urea grease, I'll probably grease it up by tonight. Hopefully that sound goes away. I'll try to get a video as well to see if i can capture the sound. I'll update once its all done.

Thanks, i appreciate the help.

The re grease was pretty easy, it took about 15-20 minutes. As for that sound, it seems to have gone down a bit. I don't think I can drive the car without the boot though, the sound will go through. It sounds more like a spool/whine down. Somehow I feel it could be a bit normal as I have read other posts on this thread that with the boot and foam, it helps suppress the sound from the transmission. When I pulled the shift lever out, it was pretty nasty, all the lube was dark gray and it looks like it was the first time it was re greased. It does shift a little better so it was worth it.

Thanks for the help mister x!

Anyone still know the part name or number to that plastic ring?

Plastic Ring = 54107-S2A-003 HOLDER B, CHANGE BOOT $2.68
Pivot ball at the end of the shifter = 54111-S2A-003 COVER, PIVOT $2.02

Just greased mine the other night. 125k miles. Seemed to make a small difference, nothing major. Easy to do.

Thanks for the part number. Yeah not a big difference after the re grease. The whining sound I'm having is sometimes audible in neutral and stops when the clutch is engaged. Anyone have any thoughts? Its weird, after I upgraded to an ap2 console, I started hearing that sound. It kind of sounds like air passing through the tranny and up the shift lever. I could be wrong though. Tolerable with my exhaust and radio on.

Regreased today and shifting feels a little bit better. Was hoping for a more drastic change but I only have 49k miles so the original grease was probably still good. For people who are having troubles getting the screws back in I used a Claw Pick-Up Tool to hold the bolt and screw it in. Using the claw and putting the shifter in reverse made it really easy. Kudos to andy_intel for suggesting putting it in reverse.

Edit: Been a few days after the regrease and now there is a big difference. Shifting is much smoother and 1st to 2nd shifting has greatly improved. Really great DIY, thanks!

The nylon pivot I ordered from Honda Parts Unlimited cracked along one of the expansion cuts when I installed it onto the shifter. I don't feel like I did anything wrong. I lubed the shifter ball and pressed it firmly straight down onto the part. I wish the shipping wasn't $11 for a $2, 1 ounce part. Oh well.

Edit: I found a site with $6 shipping. I hope the one they send doesn't break as well.

Try heating it slightly. Cold plastic is often more brittle than warm.

I filed down a coat hanger to remove the plastic ring without breaking it. As far as the grease goes do I want any below the square cutout? There isn't any in there now. And that would hold 2 cans of grease by itself.
