What grease are you guys using for re packing the CV axles? And how much?

I'm looking to use Valvoline full synthetic grease approved for CV joints.

 

Redline cv grease. And about 4-5 ounces

 

The OEM greenish stuff is pretty thin.
For a reason I think.

I do not remember where I found it, last time I used "Original replacement CV grease" from GKN (CV manufacturer)
It was as thin as OEM.

 

The redline thins out with use

 

This I would not see as an advantage or selling point.
But that's me.

 

I use the Valvoline SynPower Full-Synthetic grease with Moly in all of the axle cup swaps I've done and all have been just peachy. It's also a very good general purpose grease.

 

Mobil synthetic grease. I use half a tube in each CV.

My axles are not giving me any trouble but they are 14 years old so I think fresh grease would be nice. I would like to do the outside joint to, anyone know how much grease that end uses?

Took the short axle apart and found nearly no ware I'm still going to scotch bright the inside to look new again and paint the outside. I'll get the other side apart tomorrow and do the same then, switch the cups

 

I seriously doubt the original inboard CV grease is NLGI 2.
The GKN replcement grease was also thin.
They were both thinner than NLGI 2 for sure, going by the "Consistency food analog" I think it is 1 or maybe even 0
Anything between brown mustard and tomato paste...


Looking at those needle rollers and the small gap where grease has to go through... you "want" CV grease to be thin.

General Purpose grease ≠ CV grease IMO.

Oh well...
What does Honda, or GKN, know about CV's anyways... right?
