Replacing conrod bearing shells without removing oil pump, possible?
#11
If you're going to try to put new shells, make sure you plastigauge them. Bearing to journal clearance is EXTREMELY critical. Pm me if you have any questions. Hopefully it's just the rod bearings, if it is I'm pretty sure you can save the motor if you're very careful.
If the mains are trashed, the there's no choice but to tear down the engine and rebuild it. And if main bearing damage is bad you're going to need a new engine.

Prolly best to pull the engine and do a complete overhaul. I really doubt replacing the rod bearings, alone, is going to solve all the problems with that engine.
Sorry.

You know with our cars these bearings come in several sizes, and you have to custom fit each one based on sizing, right?
If you only ordered one set of bearings, how do you know they are the right ones?

You look up the code on the crank and the block and you match them on the handy list on the service manual, and you pick the proper size plus the next two sizes up. Any smaller than that and the crank is probably trashed.

You can insert new bearings, two sizes up, without machining the crank?
Interesting...

No you can't, sorry my mistake, you can go one smaller or one bigger. 2 in either direction means the crank is trashed. Bearings come on .0002" increments, and the number or marking on the con rods tells you what bearings you have. So you buy those and two adjacent sizes.
