Default Retaining ring holding shift boot

I need to remove the retaining ring over the rubber shifter insulation, I don't want to break it so I'm wondering if anyone can shed some light on my problem for me, any help is appreciated

It has four little clips at the NE, NW, SE, SW diagonals. If you push the rubber in towards the shifter you will see the slots. You can slide a fine screwdriver in there and wiggle them out one at a time.
