Retracting timing chain tensioner
Just wondering if it's possible to use a shorter bolt than what the recommended one of 40mm is. All I can find around my area is a 25mm long one. Will this work, or do I absolutely need the 40?
you can do it with a shorter bolt, but you have to do it after you take it out. I did it with a 25mm bolt, but i pulled it from the head then took the back plate off, then screwed the bolt in and put the pin, in just make sure you put it in the right side so you can pull it out when installed int he head. you can also use a 14mm wrench to turn the tensinor back in from the front side if you don't have a bolt at all. this way is a little harder but can be done.
Yeah, the unit is already out. I accidently took it off because I didn't know what it was! Thought it was part of the VTEC solenoid!!!
Anyway, all the components are there and I just need to put it back in. I still need the nut though aye? To prevent it from spinning back? Also, I don't have anything as of yet for a pin, but would a paper clip actually work? What did you guys use?
Cheers for the replies boys!

There is a long thread on this thing. Some people are sanding the worm gear, you might want to do it while it is out. According to Billman you can break the chain if this is installed wrong, so try to get it right the first time.
i used a small allen key you know the L shaped ones. i don't think a paperclip would be strong enough to hold it might bend. you don't need the nut. just the bolt. you can spin the bolt in it will retract the rod, you may have to push a little bit on it to get it all the way back in, just slide the pin in. but make sure you know what way it goes, the longer flat side goes towards the back of the car the side with the little s curve goes towards the front. you need to have it in the correct way so you can pull the pin back out.
