Thumbs down Reverse Shift Gate

Ok over the last couple of days somethign odd has been happening in MY00 S2K. Thursday - I have to push down to get into reverse
Friday - I have to push down to get into reverse
Friday Afternoon - I no longer have to push down the shifter to get into reverse. Also while driving the gate to reverse is gone.

Saturday Morning - I have to push down to get into reverse everything seems fine. By noon on Saturday same issue with the gate and not having to push down to get into reverse.

Nothing has changed on the car, I was getting a little rattling from under the shift knob and I tightened up the small bolt their. Does that change the tension or somethign on the S2K?

I am at a loss.

Please help out.

There is a spring that offers resistence when you push down on the stick to access the reverse gate at the far right side. It sounds to me that your spring has somehow lost its attachment point at the base of the stick. Remove the console cover and lift the boot up so you can see the action of this spring. This will give you some clue as to how to fix it.
Also, you should not be trying to find reverse when driving the car (forward). It's a good thing that you can't put it into the reverse slot. Even with the clutch fully on the floor, going into reverse with any forward speed may be a very bad thing. Maybe the tranny is designed to prevent this. Are you saying that you were once able to do this but now you can't? Or is it that you just tried this recently when the "push down" spring went weird?

The gate 'disappered' after I noticed that I didnt have to push down to get into reverse. By gate I mean when the shifter isnt pushed down you cannot get into reverse the 'wall' that is their. Of course I threw the car into reverse while on the freeway while dumping the clutch J/K I just tried to shift into fifth gear while on the freeway and the shifter completey missed it... went into no mans land - above reverse. I had to hunt for fifth gear. But it looks like it may be the spring issue you mentioned.

Until you get it fixed, I think you can get into 5th and 6th without mistakenly going into the slot above the reverse gate if you consciously pull up (and keep it up) on the stick when you go for 5th (and 6th). This will simply do what the spring does for you. Without that spring, the stick just falls "down" and stays there.

That was going to be my question...

When you lose the gate can you then take the shifter and lift it up a measurable amount when you shift gears? Normaly you should be able to push down on the stick and have it push back up. If it doesnt return quickly or easily then there is one of 2 things going on. Either you need to regrease the bottom area of the stick shift or one of the 2 plastic/nylon pieces is broken and needs to be replaced.
