Rust proofing was "valuable" before the metal was coated on both sides with zinc in the 70-80s. My favorite was us companies galvanizing one side, but not the other...That sealer was an oil-bitumen layer. You can buy a can of that in a much better modern formulation if you cut the factory metal for a roll bar, etc. but don't bother getting any kind of treatment.
