Burning/consume engine oil at break-in period that is...
If quality control and precision is maintain in manufacturing, than all engines should be about the same, or not? (assuming of course drivers obey break-in rules).
Now, we know it's a special engine but that does not explain the difference in oil consumption due to ring seating periods or whatever, as experienced by the variuos owners.
Is this some kind of a Voodo, unexplainable phenomena?
What do you think? Did any one asked Honda about that?
BTW, my Stook did not use any oil during break-in, in which I did venture into Vtec zone for short runs, change oil at about 1000 miles to 5W40 Synt. I found that viscosity range too thick, will change to 5W30 Syn in the spring. Still going strong not using a drop of oil. Just what I expected from a Honda engine or any other manufacturer!

You may suffer later for changing to a synthetic prior to recommended break in...then again you may not. One of the great S2K mysteries? I trust in the money has put in testing and developement. I document everything to keep my warranty clean and clear. This car is special.......

"Suffer later" why do you think this may happend?
The Owner manual just recommend oil API grade, viscosity range and change periods, can't do wrong if you exceed thier recommendation, I would think.
BTW, regarding the much-discussed engine oil issue, if you use a premium motor oil that meets the recommended API classifications and viscosity range, the only difference between the various brands is the kind of perfume they use to turn you on!

My FIRST engine didn't burn any oil during its short 660 miles of life. Of course it did burn the engine at about 651 miles. It saw the VTEC solenoid accuate a couple of times. It even visited the flashing red bars once.
My second engine is down one "x" at 420 miles.
Burning/not burning oil really doesn't matter. As long as you don't burn the engine. There are so many things that account for the differences. Probably the most important is how you drive in respect to high revs and rapid right hand turns.
I'm tentatively planning on changing the oil to fresh mineral based oil at about 500 to 1,000 miles. I'm planning to switch to Mobil 1 at 5,000 miles, if I ever get there.

Barry, that's about what I did on my 2000 model in terms of oil changes and synthetic.
BTW, I've done 100 miles since I last checked the oil and I haven't burned a drop. No hard right turns and minimal VTEC. I wanted to do more, but it's been raining a lot.

If it was not for the mechanical problems presented on this board, based on my own experience I would think that as far as reliability and maintenance the S2K is just another Honda, a super-Honda.

Barry,
You sound like you're losing faith! Being personally envolved and burnt as you've been - I quess it's to be expected. Probably from keeping score. With any luck, 100,000 miles from now you'll look back on all this and smile.
