Default second gear gone!

Well guys, I was out having some fun in "Mexico", when I grabbed a very hard 2nd gear shift. It grabbed pretty hard, and then I heard a loud pop followed by grinding and transmission noise. I then came to find out, that second gear is GONE. Every other gear still seems to work as it should. So I know it's not a rear diff or cv axle problem. Long story short, I put it in second gear and absolutely nothing happens. I'm thinking I sheared the gear off inside the tranny. By the way, it's a 2001 AP1 with this issue. Any insight on replacing just the internal parts of transmission, or any input at all on the costs and smartest route to go would be much appreciated! Thanks guys!

I'm not too keen on the mechanics of transmissions but I do know that (assuming you were gonna pay someone to do this) its probably in your best interest, cost wise, to just pick up a whole new used transmission and have it throw on. Cost of authentic manufacture parts for rebuilding a transmission plus labor will, in my opinion, probably exceed the cost of just swapping in a better, hopefully lower milage, transmission.

Unless you can repair this yourself (free labor) a complete transmission swap seems the most economical solution. Not sure when the better syncros went into the gear box but newer is better. The AP2 transmission will work as well but has different ratios.

Replace the clutch while the gearbox is out.

At a minimum it will need a mainshaft and second gear set.

Once you price them a used trans will look better.

Yeah I've priced a used transmission for 800 bucks, with only 62k miles on it. I think I'm just going to go that route and rebuild my old one while it's out of the car. Plus I'll go ahead and replace the clutch while I'm at it. Any suggestions on what clutch and flywheel I should go with?

Stay OEM unless you plan on doing upgrades outside of simple bolt ons.

If you decided to upgrade, the ACT PP/oem disk combo is popular. I also had a great experience with the Clutchmasters stage 2.
