RONALD: thanks for the information buddy! nice to know that the S community looks out for each other!
InsaniT: man, that sucks. best of luck. hopefully our actions (if we decide to do this) will help your cause.
I'M READY TO DO WRITE MY LETTER, especially after last weekend. i'll tell you guys about it...i was at the dealer, just to look into buying another car, when i see this black S coming up the road towards the entrance. hey, i drive a black one too so i'm thinking "my car looks great with the top down." so i'm just looking at it turn in when...TAP TAP TAP! man, it was pretty loud too! i was pretty far away and i still heard it. i immediately thought #4 cylinder!!!!!!!
i was always curious what it sounded like and now, unfortunately i found out.
it was a 2001 and not a lot of miles. i talked to the guy who was not a member and informed him to state that they should look at the #4 cylinder. he was grateful and hopefully, he'll join the family here (told him of the site). btw, this was in college park, MD.
bottom line: i'm ready to write my letter, if this board decides to pursue this option (or not even). i figure there's nothing to lose and everything to gain, especially for those folks out there having to fight to have it repaired (good luck again!!). there's nothing wrong with writing a letter expressing our concerns and it's better to try than do nothing, hoping America Honda comes around for us. i think we should go for it. IF they opt not to do a recall here (after completing their cost analysis (repairs as they come before the warranty VS recall)), then it will be MUCH MUCH MUCH harder to convince them to do it later!
LET'S GO FOR IT!

I agree with nHobbes. I don't agree with krazik that it's too early to start a campaign. Hoping they'll take care of us probably won't work. If krazik is worried about the fix not working, so what, it's on their shoulders at least at that point.
Everyone should realize, even those of you without a tap tap tap right now, that your cars are very likely to develop this after your warrantees expire!!! Mine did. I'm fortunate to have an extended warrantee, but not everyone is.
Since Honda has recognized this problem officially elsewhere, we have a very good case against them. I'm not sure what the best way to approach this is, but I think we should do it.

First off, this #4 cylinder problem is the first I've heard of it... Does this have anything to do with the fact that my #4 plug always reads more lean than my other three plugs? I've always wondered about that?!
Second, if we, the S2000 owners of US, are to write a letter, someone should create a standard formatted letter that expresses our concern and would be available for download here on the forum. We could download it, sign it, and then fax it or mail it to AHM. A standardized letter might seem more like a petition of sorts.
It's just an idea... Definately something must be addressed.

Chris,
I think you're right about the form letter. I would think the threat of bad PR for the car could go a long way.
Re. your spark plug. Yes, that is probably a symptom of the problem with the cylinder. My #4 plug was totally fried when I checked, whereas the others were decent. Everyone check your plugs! The backout problem seems to happen to all the plugs, but that's a different issue.

i think we should, although this is a given, make sure we add that we are members of s2ki.com. this will give them, besides the same formatted letter, the heads up that we are a unified voice in this matter. ALSO, since s2ki.com is actually being suggested to new owners in some dealerships (mentioned on a thread i can't remember), that will say a lot also. they'll also see just how influential and encompassing this board truly is in the S2000 world! i truly believe we should go forward with this idea. better to play it safe! and it's never too early to make a intelligent, DIPLOMATIC plea for action.
just my opinion.
just my opinion.
My S2k has about 17k on it now and I have had no problems thus far (stock). However, I would definitley help out in the letter-writing campaign..sort of a pre-emptive strike, if you will. I am looking to start modding my car now and I would like to know this problem is going to be taken care of, if it ever arises.
Everyone, please keep this thread updated. Thanks.
