Default Shifting to 5/6/Reverse problems

Hello all,

After having searched for some time, I have not found anything related to my problem. Perhaps someone could offer up their wisdom!

I picked up my ap1 last night from a local performance shop. They put in an f22c long block with 50k miles. On the drive home I noticed several odd things:

1. When shifting from 4th to 5th I noticed there was about an extra inch or two of space or play in the fifth and sixth gear region. It was kind of disconcerting to be traveling at speed, push the clutch in then shift from fifth to sixth but having to "search" for sixth because of the extra play on the right side of the shifter.

2. When backing into my driveway I was not able to push down in neutral and pull back toward sixth gear to engage reverse. I could only reach reverse gear by taking the shifter from neutral, pulling directly right then back like I was going to engage sixth gear. The way I had to engage reverse left me scared to use sixth gear on the freeway in fear of accidentally grabbing reverse instead of sixth. I remember that in my ap1 transmission I had to push directly down in neutral then guide the shifter toward sixth gear to engage reverse. Are ap2 transmissions different?

3. When I pulled into work and proceeded to back up into my parking space this morning, all of a sudden I was able to engage reverse the correct way - by pushing down in neutral then going toward sixth. I got excited thinking my shifting problems magically disappeared over night but when I tried to repeat the process a minute later it went back to the old way mentioned in 1 and 2 above.

I called the shop and they said they will look into it. I will not have a chance to bring the car back until next week. A couple of friends who own s2s said a couple of different things could have happned:

a. The shop may have used the same shifter from my f20 on my f22. Does the f22c use a different shifter rod then the f20c?

b. The shop may have installed the shifter backwards...

Can anybody help me out? Thank you in advance for reading this book...

Thomas

The shifter between an AP1 and AP2 is identical. My money is on them installing it backwards, or possibly breaking one of the plastic pieces that makes up the shifter itself.

After re-reading the OP it's also possible that they omitted the spring upon shifter reinstallation. That may very well be your problem as well.

Your shifter is getting stuck in the "pressed down" position you normally push it into to shift into reverse. I don't remember how I did it, but I was able to make my shifter do this (and stay there). All you should have to do is pull up on it slightly, and it should be back to normal.

If that doesn't fix it, there's probably something wrong with the mechanism that keeps the shifter up.

^ exactly what he said and the comment about missing the spring. If the spring is missing/broke/installed incorrectly then your shifted is getting stuck down.

Thank you all for your responses.

I played around around with the shifter and what do you know - I was able to pull the shifter up into its normal position. However, when pushing back down it feels really rough and it does not want to spring back up like my old transmission did.

Time to get a new spring? I go back to the shop on Wednesday. I will update then.

Thanks again!

Same with my 01 s2k. Shifter get stuck on Reserve when it is hot.
I don't mind though... Im so used to it I know exactly and 5th and 6th is (=
I kinda like it though... that way you wouldn't have to press down every time when you want to reserve. Just slide it all the way right and youre good Maybe it's just me haha
