Default Shifting problems

Hello All-

I recently was street racing (not serious racing- just bored thirty something racing) my S2K with another S2k from a standstill start. As we started I had it rev'd to about 4k and when I went into first it slipped. Initially, I thought I missed the shift and quickly threw it into second (at this point I had a pretty high rpm). But I realized that I had correctly shifted but it did not take. I have also had a few problems in the past with it popping out of gear. Has anyone had this happened?

bring it back to your dealer. Something is wrong with your gearing spring. Happened to an Exige, not sure what happen to his car now.....He said from 5th gear it would go to 3rd gear when he doesn't holding it

The S2000 clutch slips quite easily, especially during high RPM launch. I don't think the dealer can do anything about it. As for the popping out of gear problem, you should take the car to the dealer and have them take a look.

There were a couple of clutches that were replaced under warranty. They were the original clutch design, so I don't know if they would reply to you. You might want to think of getting an aftermarket clutch if slipping is your problem. Document it and let Honda look at it first.

This post makes it sound like you shifted into first from a standstill WHILE the car at 4000rpm?

What was slipping, the clutch (accompanied by a terrible smell), or the tires?

This is normal for an S2000. I have had it happen once and then I learned my lesson. A 4k clutch drop will result in the clutch slipping as you have no wheel spin. In order for the clutch to not slip you need either

a). lots of revs (7k+) to induce wheel spin instead of clutch slip; or
b). only a few revs in which case clutch slip will not occur

Once the clutch is sliping in first then putting it in second will just cause more clutch slip. I bet it smelt pretty bad too, eh!

Popping out of gear is a totally different issue and is unrelated to this problem.

Hmm...I think I'm having similar problems. I only have 6700 miles on my car, but it is having trouble shifting. It just started yesterday and I suspect that I have burned my clutch. When i go to accelerate hard, the tach lights up but the car doesn't go in turn. I'm going to my dealer tommorow morning. I'll post back when I find out what's going on.

I just had a clutch replacement under waranty with my S2k because the throw out bearing went bad after 10,000 miles. It still seems to shift rough especially going from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Sometimes grinds when shifting and I'm not even running it hard. I've noticed it especially grinds when doing quick shifts. I bought this car used so I don't know how the previous owners took care of it. I'veread previous posts and articles about the grinding problem.

About the 7k launch - it really depends on the traction available on the surface. At my autocross events, a 3000-4000 rpm launch is adequate to spin the tires just right, a 7000+ launch would keep me at the start line for a very long time.
