Should a 2002 S2000 have gear trouble?
My s2000 grins going into second when its past v-tec. I heard about the older models having this problem, but should the new one have it too?

is your gearbox fully warmed up?
i only get butterly smooth shifting when the gear is warmed up
gear box warm up is different than the engine warm up or the tires. it takes some driving and shifting and it takes me a little longer to warm up the gear box.

I have a '02 too and it grinds sometimes. Normally at around 5-6K, when the gear box is warm. I think it has to do with driver's error. It mostly happens (about once a week or once every two weeks)when I do a "right turn start", thru 1st gear I place my left foot on the foot rest, so when it's time to shift, it takes longer for my left foot to travel from the foot rest to the clutch paddle, and my hand shifts quicker.
I had my car for a year now, and it grinded at least 50 - 60 times. I haven't noticed any difference in my car (gear box, clutch). It works fine just like day 1. I would not worry about it.

I also have an '02 with intermittent 1-2 upshift gear grind (no specific RPM), and 3-4 upshift gear grind at 8K RPM+. It does happen when the tranny is warm. It is so inconsistent that it catches me off guard. Do we need TSB's done? I dread going to honda..

I only had a few 3rd-4th upshift grind, all at redline. I redline 3rd a lot..... I would not worry about that either I'd take it to the dealer when it breaks. Just enjoy the car!

I redline 3rd alot too, but I guess you are right. It just makes me lose sleep sometimes. 3rd year of production and same problem reoccuring. I think it must be heat related. Too much heat, we need a tranny cooler-I am convinced.

There are a few things you can do to greatly reduce the frequency of the grind. If you have much free play in the clutch pedal, that can be adjusted out. You can also replace the tranny fluid. I had a lot of grinding due to excessive heat during the summer with Honda MTF, but GM Synchromesh handled the heat REALLY well. Now that it is getting cold, the GM fluid is not doing so well.
