Spoon AP1 F20C 2.2 Stroker
For a variety of reasons that are on another thread there is a chance I’m going to have to replace my standard AP1 F20 motor. One of the options I’m considering is a 2.2 stroker, and by chance Spoon offer a ready assembled/balanced short block to do just this. As part of the advertising literature they suggest it is a direct swap but “ECU tuning recommended”.
So I have a few questions:
Is the 2.2 stroker a significant improvement? What are the driving characteristics like? More torque? More power?
And, what adjustments need doing to the ECU? Is it a simple adjustment of the rev limiter to 8450, or are there other adjustments necessary?
Finally, what is the reputation of engines built by Spoon? For a standard F20 the Spoon option is probably overkill and expensive, but for a 2.2 upgrade to AP1 the costs might work, assuming the engine build is to a good standard.
Many thanks for any advice or insight.

Spoon S2000 engines are glorified stock builds. They have a reputation for building reliable engines that you can thrash, but their 2.0L engine is so close to a stock F20C that you wouldn't feel any difference. The Spoon 2.2L is an F20C block with a stroker kit made with OEM Honda internals (F22C crankshaft, F20C rods). It has a higher CR due to the thinner head gasket, which is why they recommend ECU tuning.
You wouldn't notice a difference between a Spoon 2.2L kit and a stock F22C either, so you're better off buying a stock F22C in good condition. Less money for the same result.

Hi, thanks for the info.
I live in the UK so all our S2000’s are AP1 with the F20 engine. It’s possible to build a stroker by ordering all the separate parts but we don’t have access to getting a used F22 except by importing one. As such buying a Spoon stroker is a strong (if expensive) option as they are easily obtainable.
Since I’ve never driven one, is there a big noticeable difference between the F20 and F22 in terms of driveability and performance?
