Sqealing noise (Brakes?)
Hello, I have a 2002 Honda S2000. The brakes have been making, what can only be described as a high pitched squealing noise, upon light braking. I had a mechanic take a look at the brakes last week and he couldn't find a problem (the brake pads were replaced all round at a Honda garage in march) Now the same noise is also being heard, although more faint, whist the car is in motion, on and off, but has certainly got more frequent, and louder. Any ideas? Thanks in advance
Probably not enough graphite on the shims, missing shims, or possibly cracked pads. Given that the pads were recently replaced, I'd bet the mechanic didn't put the shims in or didn't put graphite on them.
I am having the same problem and can't find a solution either! nails on chalkboard sound coming from rear wheels that is relative to wheel speed...only difference is that mine started only at low speed, and only upon decel...its gradually gotten to the point where it happens all the time, at all speeds, very loud squealing. so annoying! let me know if you find out whats wrong.
I checked for a stone in the brakes, hoping itd be that simple of a fix, and sadly that wasn't it. Even though my mechanic says no, I'm thinking its a wheel bearing also, only makes the squealing noise under load...check out my thread https://www.s2ki.com/s2000/topic/904.../page__st__275

Just want to find a solution in case it becomes worse or dangerous. It's such and annoying noise and somewhat embarrassing. Lol I had a mechanic friend take a brief look over the brakes today but he couldn't come up with any reason to why its "squealing" either
The noise seems to be coming from the front of the car, and seems loudest on the driver side and when the car is moving slowly.
My brakes used to suffer from the same squeakyness when I first bought the car. I went around to every hub and removed the brake pads, re-greased the metal surfaces with that anti-squeal stuff from Autozone, and then ran though a bed-in procedure as if they were new pads/rotors. I think this gave the rotors a new fresh layer of pad transfer material and knocked off the outer-most layer of pad material. Some metallic compounds in the brake pads can surface as larger chunks and cause a squealing until they get worn down.
*Edit - But yeah, if its making the noise all the time, not just during braking, it may be the wheel bearing.
