Default Steering Rack tension bolt gone

Ok,

So I've had my S for about 9 or 10 months now. Well, the last 4 weeks or so I've noticed the steering became a little loose feeling. There was definitely more play than before.
After replacing a tie rod end and having my alignment done the play worsened.

Well, I found that the tension bolt where the steering rod connects wasn't just loose when I went to tighten it up... IT WAS GONE.

At some point in the last month to month and a half I can only assume it came loose and fell out.

My question... is how much damage to the rack should I expect from water/moisture/dirt/etc getting down in there?

I would be comfortable replacing the rack itself "to be completely safe" however, like most people, I'm on a tight budget right now.

The car is driveable, I just have 6mm of play in the steering wheel - which I notice most on the highway.

So, for the motor heads and those of you who truly know and understand their car...

Would it be safe enough to order the bolt and replace the necessary pieces?

Or, should I replace the whole rack? (and if anyone has done either, I would realllly appreciate a PM with an approximate cost I can expect)

Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

Are you talking about the rack guide, spring, rack guide screw and locknut

Have you driven in rain, or dirt roads in the past month and a half?

The rack is about $800-$900 dollars.
that's exactly what I'm talking about
Sorry, wasn't sure of the name when I wrote this post at work.

Haven't driven in the rain since it's summer. Just a few hundred miles or so I think since I've really noticed it.
Basically, if I can save a few hundred dollars by just replacing the guide right now, I think I'd prefer that.
