Steering Wheel Play
Noticed that my steering wheel has developed some play in it. The dealer stated that Honda spec is from 0 to 10 mm. Just wanted to know if this was normal with wear or is it something to bring back for warrantee. If this should be fixed what else should be checked other than the "gear box" for the steering mechanism?
sounds normal to me. I dont think its 'developed' per se, but more along the lines of something you've payed attention to lately. try to test it out with a new s2000 or someone else's at a gathering. but also keep in mind, this 'play' has to do with how its built for drivability on every day roads. a crisp steering shaft can be developed for this car, but that means you would feel EVERYTHING in the road and I'm not sure you really want to do that.
Thanks Cmnsnse for the input. The dealer took out some play but the steering was so stiff that it would not find center again when you released the wheel after a turn. Had them put it back to the way it was. You made a comment that you disconnected it for a tranny change. I just had the tsb done for the clutch and 1/2 grind. What did they need to "undo" for the tranny change?
They have to undo alot of stuff to get to the top tranny bolts, including lower the front sub-frame and engine 3 inches.
Included is the universal joint on the steering shaft, its right about where the AC compressor is.
Two 10mm bolts, bottom comes out, top just loosens so it can slide back to disconnect or re-align the steering wheel.
