Default Straight on tha headers...

got this piece from summit racing to run right outta the headers, tomorrow we chop off the end of the header (dc sport), chop off a section of the frame, and run a "Y" pipe right to the outside from the header.. and the open end is capped when im not runnin it.. im sure everyone knows the piece im talkin about.. just wonderin if anyone else has done this and, besides loud as hell, what kinda difference it makes.. ill post pictures when its done..

Yeah...it kills low end power, and gains maybe a little high end power. Probably more of a negative impact than a positive impact. I know a few people have done it, and I for the life of me can't remember what its called...

are you talking about a test pipe? it basically replaces where the cat would be.

yah.. kinda like a test pipe.. but it totally bypasses the cat and exhaust just by uncapping (with wing-nuts) the tube and its just runnin right out of the headers. There is still a tube going into the cat, but by uncapping the other tube, no restriction and most air will flow through there, hope your gettin some kinda mental picture.. i figured i would lose low end.. and probably wouldn't be too benefitial.. but hell it was only $35 and i figured it would be a fun afternoon projects, and a fun new way to wake up the neighbors at night.

Thats a poor implementation...there's a website, can't remember the address (Something like exhaust-cutout.com) that offers it for about the same price, and it actually has a wire that goes to the passenger compartment, so when you pull it, the exhaust switches from going into the main exhaust outlet to the wide open outlet and back.

yah... i coulda got that one.. but the owner of the shop said those leak like no other.. and i would probably never pass an inspection again... i am extending the piece through the frame and almost all the way to the outside of the car.. unbolts with wingnuts.. i can just reach under there and undo them.. and easy uncap and no leak

A very old (drag) racing technique. IMO today's free flow exhausts make the noise and trouble more of an issue than it is worth.

In the Muscle Car era, we called them "cut outs". In those days we had a cap on the end of the headers that you could remove. Both sides on the V8s. It wasn't even street legal then. Very noisy!

I have this exact piece bought from summit on my car. I have no sign of leakage. However, now I also have 3 inch catback exhaust with the exhaust bypass, no cat, and 3 inch downpipe. Opening the bypass shows little gain and lots of noise.
