Strange engine rattle on start up - video included
Hi all,
Have a 2002 AP1 that has a strange engine rattle sound upon startup. It won't do it on cold starts only warm when the revs are at normal idle. 9/10 it happens, with a little rev or a drive it goes away but as soon as I stop and restart it happens again. I've made a video so you can see what I mean.
On research the only thing I could think of was the TCT (timing chain tensioner)? Watch it right to the end as you will see once I rev it the noise goes away:

Any help appreciated
Thanks,
M

@ EOE - Thanks for the reply, don't think its a rattle like that as the noise will dissapear once you rev it.
@ Avion - Again thanks, I would imagine so but wanted to get some ideas. Since they are based on oil pressure this could explain why it's intermittent and not apparent on cold start when oil pressure is high? Maybe it's a little gunked so the lower oil pressure of a warm engine could have caused it to fail if their was insufficient lubrication?
Another thing which could be related, sometimes the car takes a few extra seconds to start/crank with the oil light illuminated, I can only assume not enough oil pressure. Could this be related? Car is run on mobil 1 and performs as it should.
@ Saki - Should have fixed the video now not sure what happened there.
Thanks all

Do a search and there is a video: sounds like yours. It's an easy and pretty much inexpensive repair. The search function is your friend. I would take care of this as soon as possible.

Thanks all going to order one from the stealer tomorrow and fit it as soon as it gets here.
Also going to change oil and filter at the same time, this 10w 30 mobil 1 just doesn't suit my driving style (over 2 hours in VTEC). Going to try some 5w 40 which should help with the hightened temperatures my S2K sees. Also going to get some better LSD and g/box oil.
I'll do a video after I've changed the tensioner, cheers for all the help very helpful

Good luck and there should be a DIY in the TCT. I do not wish comment on driving style but if it were me I would stick with 10W30 and shift gears more and not stay in VTEC so long. It's your car and you can drive it as you want.
Good luck
